Prof. Andrea Smith launches new book with public events

Prof. Andrea Smith has been busy this summer and fall talking to academic and public audiences about her new book Memory Wars: Settlers and Natives Remember Washington’s Sullivan Expedition. Memory Wars explores the public memory of the Sullivan Expedition (1779) of the Revolutionary War. Sullivan’s troops traveled from Easton into the Haudenosaunee homeland, where they destroyed over forty Indigenous villages. Today it is celebrated by 55 markers in Pennsylvania and over 200 in New York. In Memory Wars, Smith contrasts settler accounts with how the Sullivan story is expressed at Haudenosaunee cultural centers.

Most recently, Prof. Smith gave a talk at SUNY Cortland, the home of A&S’s very own Prof. Hollis Miller ’15 on October 3rd. She will also give a book talk here at Lafayette on November 13th. See the flyer below and congrats, Andrea!
